The study of the past has been a cornerstone of Western education for more than 2000 years. It challenges students to become critical, well-rounded and self-reflexive individuals through an engagement with the history of the human community. The History Program at USCB continues in this tradition, cultivating in its students a broad cultural and historical awareness as well as the ability to read carefully, think critically and write effectively. The University of North Carolina at Wilmington was founded in 1947 as Wilmington College, a locally supported and governed institution, to provide the youth and adults of New Hanover County and southeastern North Carolina with an opportunity for twoyears of university parallel study, semiprofessional training and vocational-technical education at moderate expense. In 1963 Wilmington College became a four-year institution authorized to offer the bachelor's degree, and in 1969, renamed the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, it became a constituent institution of the University of North Carolina system. Graduate studies were authorized at Wilmington in 1977;
History Major (B.A. Degree) Requirements (36 hours) Requirements for a major in History include 36 hours of History as follows: HIS 111, 112, HIS 121, HIS 122, HIS 450, and 21 additional semester hours in History. At least 12 semester hours must be earned in courses numbered 300 and above. History Majors have the option of taking Constitutional Law (POS 343) and one of the following Church History classes (REL 203, REL 207, or REL 310) as hours toward the history major. The United States Army Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) program is offered to all qualified students on a voluntary basis through a cross enrollment agreement with the University of South Carolina. All classroom instruction for the Army ROTC takes place on the campuses of Allen University, Benedict College, and the University of South Carolina. ROTC offers students the chance to develop skills such as confidence, self-esteem, motivation, time management, leadership and decision-making. It provides a wholesome environment where students can experience new challenges and personal growth, interact with students from other colleges/universities, and make new friends.
