Research Opportunities The history department offers students excellent opportunities to put their research skills to work in projects of their own devising, under the direction of a faculty member. History majors have published their work in professional journals and in the Furman Humanities Review, and Furman students have also presented their papers at academic conferences such as those of the national history honor society, Phi Alpha Theta. The Master of Arts in Education and History is offered by the College of Education in collaboration with the College of Arts and Sciences. The Master of Arts and Education degree is designed for students who wish to combine study of history with education. Students have an advisor in both the College of Education and in the College of Arts and Sciences who jointly plan and direct the program. Students may complete their culminating experience in either education or history. Of Special Interest Students seeking initial teacher licensure in Social Studies should enroll in the Master’s of Secondary Education (LAMP). Curriculum Information

The major in History combined with a minor in Secondary Education is the basis for a career as a high school teacher of history/social studies. Students who aspire to teach high school history take a series of education courses in the Secondary Education minor, and complete a semester of student teaching in their senior year. This course of study has been approved by the State of Maine Department of Education and allows students to stand for certification as high school teachers. Students from other states should work with their Secondary Education advisor to secure current certification requirements for those states.

A History Education degree will give you the knowledge of history and the teaching skills you need to be successful in the classroom.

A minor in history consists of at least five courses, three of which must be from the upper division and which must come from at least two of the categories listed above. Minors will be able to demonstrate similar knowledge and skills. Departmental Honors Students who major in history may attain Departmental Honors by earning a grade of B+ or better in HIS 495 and by attaining a grade point average of 3.75 in courses in the major and an overall grade point average of 3.50. Professional Studies in Education: History History majors may wish to pursue New York State teacher certification to teach social studies on the high school or middle school levels. Specific course work is outlined in the Education section of this website. History majors planning to teach high school or middle school must take six credits (6) in Economics and Political Science. Additional programs available to students in this department include childhood education (Grades 1-6), early childhood education, and education of students with disabilities.
