History majors must take a minimum of 33 hours in history. Required courses include History 101, 102, 111,and 112. At least 6 hours of U.S. history and 6 hours of non-U.S. history must be taken at the 300-level. In all, at least five 300-level courses must be taken. History 415 (Senior Paper) is recommended for students planning on graduate or law school.
Recommended courses also include Political Science 105 and at least one course in Geography.
All departmental majors must pass written and oral comprehensive examinations.

With thirty faculty members and about 600 full-time undergraduate and graduate students, the Illinois State University History department is one of the largest in the state. We offer over 100 undergraduate and graduate courses, which range in time from ancient history to the present, in area from North America and Europe to Africa, the Middle East, East Asia, and Latin America, and in scope from politics, economics and religion to diplomatic, cultural, social, intellectual, and military history.
Students who pursue teacher certification in conjunction with the Department of History are prepared to teach at the secondary level in the state of Illinois after fulfilling departmental requirements.
A history major planning to teach at the secondary level should choose courses according to interest, while keeping in mind the importance of balance within the department. It is more than likely that a history teacher will teach a combination of American history and European or Asian history.
To be admitted to the teacher education program, a student must present a 2.75 general grade-point average and a 3.00 grade-point average in the history

Courses are offered in a full range of European and American history, from ancient history to modern America. Our program stresses original historical thinking. You will learn to analyze primary and secondary sources, to reach your own conclusions about the readings and to document conclusions with historical evidence.
A history major has traditionally served as preparation for a career in college or high school teaching or for a career in law. The major also provides a good background for further study in business or journalism or for careers in management, technical writing and museum and archival administration.
