The MRes provides excellent preparation for study at MPhil/PhD level for students with a defined research topic, but is also a degree in its own right. The programme is primarily assessed by a 20,000-word dissertation on your chosen topic, with additional assessed courses in research methods and cultural history. MRes Architectural History can be taken either full time over 12 months or part time over 24 months. The MRes Architectural History programme comprises three assessed modules: research methods in architectural history, research in the arts and humanities, and a masters thesis, or approved research project. Full time students take research methods in architectural history in term one, research in the arts and humanities over terms one and two, and their thesis across the full academic year. Part time students take the two taught modules in year one and carry out their thesis in the second year. The primary
Cultural history is about the ways in which individuals and cultures define themselves and their relations with others. This programme explores new directions in cultural history and is responsive to and questioning of cultural change. The approach is interdisplinary and we welcome applicants with a background in history, other humantities disciplines and the social sciences. The MA encourages you to pursue evidence-based archival research, but assumes that historical enquiry is always theoretically informed. It examines current research within the subject, encourages you to pursue your own interests, and prepares you to write (or produce in some other medium) a dissertation
