Art History Undergraduate at Skidmore College

Friday, February 27th, 2009

Art history is distinctive in its direct engagement with art objects through visual analysis and historical study. We use art objects to understand history and culture, and history and culture to understand art objects. Students earning a bachelor of arts in art history explore the varied roles of artists, their art, and their patrons across diverse cultural and historical contexts. In addition, they experience the creative process of making art. Students gain a breadth of knowledge spanning both Western and non-Western subfields in the discipline. Art history majors develop skills in analyzing images of texts that are applicable to a wide range of personal, civic, and professional endeavors; they may also go on to graduate work in art history and professional work in art-related fields.

We’re glad you’re here. Simon’s Rock is sort of an unusual (extraordinary, actually) place to be. Most people go to college after they finish high school. This is different. This is college, right now—immediately after the tenth or eleventh grade. It’s a conscious choice, a deliberate break from the standard schooling track. If you come here, you’ve thought carefully about who you are, what’s important to you, and what you’re capable of. We like that. We hope you like us.

Art History Undergraduate at Salem College

Friday, February 27th, 2009

One of the defining characteristics of Salem’s Art Department is closeness. Students and professors alike have an uncommon passion for the study and practice of art and design-in all forms-and therefore have established a tightly knit community of friends and learners. While it is one of Salem’s larger departments, art classes rarely exceed 30 students, with most upper-level classes numbering five to 10 students

You may choose from among three majors within the Art Department:
Studio Art – with a concentration in painting, printmaking or graphic design.
Art History – encompassing ancient, Greek, Medieval, European and American periods
Interior Design – including courses in textile, residential, business practices, architectural and computer-assisted design plus history, historic preservation and selected studio art/art history topics.

Studio Art and Art History are also available as minors.

It goes without saying that you are creative and have a passion for the arts! You are also likely to be motivated, creative, independent and bring a solid work-ethic to the classroom. You will be encouraged to share your ideas and opinions as well as to seek out inventive ways of learning. You will take part in internships and special projects as well as study abroad in order to broaden your artistic horizons. While at Salem you will complete a require research project. You may also want to join one of two student arts organizations on campus, the American Society of Interior Design (ASID) or April Arts.
