Major in History at Fort Lewis College

The Art History Minor provides a rich and unique understanding of social and cultural movements through the lens of art. It also helps prepare students to apply to graduate art and art history programs, and provides important background for art-related fields such as museum studies, architecture, advertising and art marketing.

The Art Minor provides a sustained exploration of art and art-making to students majoring in other fields. Students complete foundations courses, an art history course as well as studio courses of their choice.

MAJOR REQUIREMENTS: STUDIO ART

A minimum of 44 semester credits, distributed as follows:

1. Three courses, 12 semester credits, in art history: one from Art 101 or 111, one from Art 152 or 153, and at least one art history course at the 200-level or higher.

2. One course in 2-D basic design/Art 102 or 3-D basic design/Art 103 to be taken before the junior year.

3. One course in drawing or painting: Art 115 or 117.

4. One course in sculpture or ceramics: Art 113 or 116.

5. Senior Seminar Art 411.

6. Senior Project Art 490A and Art 490B.

7. Three elective courses in studio art.

MAJOR REQUIREMENTS: ART HISTORY

A minimum of 44 semester credits, distributed as follows:

1. Choose three of five: Art 101, 111, 152, 153 or 207.

2. Choose any two Studio courses.

3. Choose one of three: History 300: Historical Materials; Anthropology 245: Visual Anthropology; Philosophy 203: Truth and Beauty.

4. Four elective courses in art history, at least two of which must be at the 300 or 400 level, and at least one must be in East Asian art or Pre-Columbian art at the 200 level or higher.

5. Senior Seminar Art 493. Must be taken the fall semester before graduation.


MINOR REQUIREMENTS: STUDIO ART and ART HISTORY

(The minor is for non-majors only).

A minimum of 24 semester credits (six courses), distributed as follows:

1. Two courses in art history: one from Art 101 or 111, one from 152, 153 or 207.

2. One course in 2-D studio art: Art 102, 115, 117, or 120.

3. One course in 3-D studio art: Art 103, 113 or 116.

4. Two elective courses in art studio or art history.

Art History Requirements at La Salle University

Requirements for double majors (generally 10 courses) are determined in consultation with the Chair and may include a combination of Art History, Studio and DArt courses.

Required for Minor in Art History:
6 courses, adhering to the following guidelines:
One (and only one) course at the 100 level
At least two courses at the 300 level
The remaining three courses may be distributed between 200 and 300-level courses as the student wishes.
One (and only one) Studio course may be counted toward the minor
The Art History minor may, with permission of the Chair, pursue an internship, which will count toward the minor.
Students are advised to elect related courses in other disciplines that will be meaningful in enriching their concentration in Art History. It is recommended that art history majors take at least two years of either German or French, especially if they intend to pursue graduate study. The Art History major is to consider ART 201-202 as prerequisite for other Art History courses.
