History BA at Silesian University

Course Content

The study takes 3 years for BA and 2 for MA and cover history starting from ancient times and finishing with the present-day. The programme of study covers the following blocks of core subjects: Ancient History, Ancient History of Poland, Introduction to Historical Research, Medieval History of Poland, World Medieval History, Modern History of Poland up to 1795, World History up to1789, History of Poland 1795-1918, World History 1789-1918, Contemporary History of Poland 1918-1944, World Contemporary History 1918-1945, History of Poland since 1944, World History after 1945, History of Silesia, History of Historiography with Elements of Historical Methodology.

Subjects of general knowledge - Sciences auxiliary to history, History of the System of Poland, Political Geography of the World, History of Philosophy, History of European Art, Theory of Social Development, Elements of Statistics and Historical Demography, foreign language classes, Latin, Physical Education.

Courses of Archive History also include subjects such as the development of office forms, knowledge of archives and archive practices.

Quality Assurance

The State Accreditation Committee has accredited History for the quality of teaching.

ECTS

The ECTS, the European Credit Transfer System, a systematic way of describing an educational programme by attaching credits to its components is established in History as a proper mean of promoting the most widespread student mobility.

Teaching and Assessment

The classes are a combination of lectures, tutorials, pro-seminars and seminars. Assessment is by exams in most subjects. The subjects of the seminars cover all epochs, some of them may be directed towards one area, e.g. economic history, social history and problems of culture. MA graduates received qualification to work in education fields and libraries, museums, publishing houses and other cultural institutions.

In addition to a deeper understanding of the past and present, you will also discover that the skills of a good historian are applicable in a very wide range of future careers. Graduates can find employment in broadcasting centres, publishing houses, libraries, archives, as well as in education and journalism.

The compartment history consists of a variety of sub-disciplines, which all the methodological and substantive diversity of historical science reflect. There are times, property and regional disciplines which define over the period covered by them, on the specific study area or on the explored region. For all its variety and diversity is part of all historical subjects of the basic methodological access in common: They try to explore the past and thus present a better grasp. Central basis of historical science, the history sources, so any kind of objectified, writing, media, in rare cases, oral tradition. These historical methods to interpret and evaluate is the task of the historian / historian of these methods to learn is an essential part of studying history. The study is largely exemplary created. In Proseminar (undergraduate level prior to the intermediate), in exercises and seminars in the main (in the main after the intermediate) is based on the selected topics learned historical works. In addition, lectures with an overview of broader issues and longer-term developments. At a major objective of the study is part of any provision of teaching beyond the capacity for methodical, systematic, theory-led work. With this cut, the study of history which in our time constantly accelerating change in the knowledge content in a special way. This opens up the subject of history graduates in the labor market additional opportunities.

Basic rule of combinations

The examination regulations stipulate that when choosing a major, historic another historic first compartment minor to be chosen: It must be the main and first two of the three minor epochs: Antiquity, Middle Ages, modern times include.
Exceptions to the combinations

If the tray 1 as the major chosen, it may with the approval of the Doctoral Committee on the establishment of a first historic minor modification and a specific scientific liaison antiquity – such as Latin, Greek, archeology – in their stead.

When the tray 2 as a major election or is the main focus of the test subjects in the 4-6 in the Middle Ages, it must be the main emphasis in the examination of the 1st Minor, the Ancient History or Modern History or a subset of exclusively modern subjects 4 a.m. to 6 p.m. concern.

When the tray 3 as a major election or is the main focus of the test subjects in the 4-6 in the modern era, it must be the main emphasis in the examination of the first minor, the Old or the medieval history, or only part of the medieval fan 4-6 relate to .

History of Science and Technology

The subject »History of Science and Technology” explores the origins and development of natural sciences, mathematics and technology in their various disciplines in the context of their intellectual and historical conditions and their social impact. A look at the science and technology as one of his people and their space-related experience will lead to a broader understanding of science and technology and its role in culture and society. This includes aspects from the scientific theory, science and sociology of knowledge as well as from the social and institutional history of science and technology. The lectures dealt with in the period includes the development of science and technology from the dawn of Mesopotamian and Egyptian civilizations on the European antiquity, the Christian Middle Ages and the Muslim culture circle to modern times including the 20th Century.

Suitability determination processes
The Historical Seminar, a suitability determination process for the study of the subject in the history master degree programs through. This procedure applies to all students with a history as a specialist or a master’s Major Minor MA at LMU Munich want to start. An enrollment in a Master’s Degree with a history specialist at the LMU is only possible when there is the aptitude test procedure was successfully completed.

Affected are therefore

First, a master’s degree with a historical expert to start, whether as a major or minor;

On the historical and the Basic language examinations
Intermediate (only in the major)

Zwischenprüfung addition to the benefits of the Basic nor the language skills demonstrated above. The intermediate consists of a written (1 hours per exam) or oral (each 20 minutes) examination on the substance of three – at least two– Lectures from the three eras of history.
Graduate (5-8 semesters)

Detailed provisions for this study do not exist, the general framework (size of the number of hours per week, required seminar notes, etc.) is based on the rules of the examination, see below “Required evidence ..”.
Required documents for reporting to the audit

Master’s in a historic main-(and sub-) fold, or in one or two minor historical:
Proof of successful participation in 2 major seminars in the main subject and one main event in addition to the two subjects;
Proof of the main intermediate.
Master audit services

The MA examination includes a written essay (dissertation) and a written exam in the major and oral examinations in primary and in the two minor fields.

MA in History at Leiden University

The one-year MA in History is aimed at those who wish to specialise in a particular historical period or theme, and who wish, in the process, to acquire the skills involved in independent, creative and critical research. Uniquely in the Netherlands, the Leiden University History Department is characterised by its international orientation. The Dutch History section, for example, studies the relationship between the Netherlands and Europe and the world outside Europe. The History Department has chairs in Ancient History, Medieval History, Dutch History, Early Modern History, Contemporary History, American History, Maritime History, Social History and Economic History.
