The (Middle and Modern) art history, as they form part of the LMU is represented, deals with the historical development and the phenomenological interpretation of the visual arts in Europe and, optionally, the countries of Islam, starting with the 6th Century until 21 Century, it applies in the more recent period also objets d’art from countries outside these areas, including the U.S., in research as well. It covers all art forms, namely architecture and urban design, sculpture, and sculpture, painting and graphic arts, applied arts (the Artes minor), and modern media such as photography and film. Then there is the confrontation with the general theory of art and the history of science of the subject. The course aims to impart skills, the monuments of visual art to arrange, in conjunction with neighboring disciplines to analyze and to their historical source of their artistic value and rank to be determined. The analysis of written sources and the style of criticism form the basis for example, at least for a mental reconstruction of the original form and function of art, so they allow the clarification of the legislative history as a work in consultation with reference material from the same era.
A special feature of the course in Munich is that the history of Islamic art in the context of the general history of art is represented, and the widespread Eurocentricity of the subject can be so broken. This allows the students to take courses and seminars on the history of Islamic art, especially in Europe (Spain, Sicily, the Balkans) and in the vast Mediterraneum (Turkey, Middle East, Egypt, North Africa) to visit, or even a focus of study so as to put or even the work that exam to write. Students islam science majors, the history of Islamic art as an independent minor choices (see below).
A feature of the methodology of the subject is a close integration of historical and aesthetic perspective: history of art is not solely historical discipline, but it has a direct reference to philosophy already in the question of the nature and meaning of artistic creativity. Each structure of a memorial also needs to resolve the increasingly ethnic historical, religious, political and social conditions of art, its meaning, purpose and form, without this background, many remain unresolved. This art history comprehensively fulfill their duties, are touch points with the exception of the aforementioned subjects, where the ancient art history (Classical Archeology), Byzantine Studies, sociology, psychology, theology and religious studies, literature and music history. The art style methods such as history, sources, iconography, iconology, etc. also employ other archaeological subjects, economics and ethnology, Indology etc.
