History Undergraduate at Laurentian University

1000 series courses are first year courses. 2000 series courses are upper year courses in European history. 3000 series courses are upper year courses in North American/non-European history. Any second or third year student may take courses from the 2000 or 3000 series. 4000 series courses are senior seminars designed for specialized program students. Refer to Laurentian’s general requirements pertaining to all degree programs.

Bachelor of Arts General Programs in History (3 years)

Consultation Form for Three-Year General Concentration

With a single concentration, students must complete 36 credits in History.

First Year: 6 credits from the following: HIST 1106, 1107, 1206, 1207, 1406, 1407 (3 cr. each)

Second and Third Years: 30 upper year History credits. Courses may be selected from either the 2000 series (European) or 3000 series (North American) in both years and must include:
6 credits from HIST 2006, 2026, 3006 or 3926 (3 cr. each) must be included, usually in the second year.
6 credits must be taken at the 2000 series and 6 credits from the 3000 series

History Admission Detail at Laurentian University

Admissions to the graduate program are handled by OUAC. Applicants are required to provide undergraduate transcripts along with three letters of reference regarding their academic suitability. Students may be admitted to the program beginning in September or January.

Applications should be complete by February 15 in order to receive full consideration for funding. Students interested in the program are encouraged to contact the graduate coordinator, Mark Kuhlberg, before making their application.

Graduate Program in History at Laurentian University

The Master of Arts in History teaches students to excel at historical analysis. The program builds critical thinking, research and communication skills. Students pursue research interests in Northern Ontario, North American or European history in either full or part time programs. The program is offered in both French and English and normally takes two years to complete in the Thesis stream, one year in the Research Essay stream. History at Laurentian teaches students to think critically about the past, and to develop the skills in research, analysis and communication that are increasingly necessary in the present. In addition to our B.A./B.A. Honours programs, we also offer graduate degrees at the M.A. level in North American and European history. All our programs are offered in both French and English.
