Admission
The MA in the History of the Book is available either full-time (over 1 year) or part-time (over two years).

Students with a good honours degree in any subject will be eligible for enrolment in the course, which may be taken on a full- or part-time basis. All students will be required to possess a reader’s ticket from the British Library; for some classes it will also be necessary to have a ticket of admission to the Department of Manuscripts in the British Library.

Students will be provided with membership cards for the School of Advanced Study, enabling access to the University of London Research Library Services, including Senate House Library and the libraries of the Institutes of the School of Advanced Study.
Full- and Part-time
As well as a one-year full-time MA to be completed within 12 months the course is offered as a two-year part-time MA to be completed within twenty-four months. Part-time students will complete the Core course and two Optional subjects in the first year, the third and fourth Options being taken in the second year. It is assumed that during the first year work will have begun on the dissertation. In order to accommodate part-time study for students on day-release it will be necessary to allocate teaching of all courses to specific days of the week.

Core Course
The MA consists of a series of five taught segments (Core course and four Option courses) and a Dissertation. The Core course is compulsory for all students: part-time students will take it in their first year. The Core consists of twenty formal teaching sessions throughout the Autumn and Spring terms; each sessions will be of not less than 90 minutes and not more than 120 minutes duration (a maximum of 40 hours for the whole course), and will be examined by one essay of c.5,000 words due in the summer term.

In addition, all students will complete a mandatory diagnostic essay of c.1,500 due at the end of October in the first term, which will be marked but does not constitute part of the assessment. This is designed to enable the teaching faculty to evaluate each student’s progress and to provide help and advice as necessary.
Option Courses
All students will take four Option courses during the MA programme: full-time students will have to take the four Options available in a given year; part-time students will be able to choose between one of two in each term. The Option course pattern is as follows: 2008-2009

Autumn: Digital Publishing and Book Studies The Medieval Book

Spring: Textual Scholarship and Contemporary Editorial Theory The Italian Book
2009-2010 (provisional)

Autumn: The Historical Reader Western Book Structures

Spring: The Serial and the Book The Look of the Book

Each Option course will consist of ten formal teaching sessions of not less than 90 minutes and not more than 120 minutes duration (a maximum of 20 hours per course). Each will be examined by one essay of c.5,000 words, or a coursework project of a similar scale.
